Amherst, named the safest town in America, located in Erie County, New York, directly northeast of the City of Buffalo. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 116,510. The town is named for Jeffrey Amherst.
The Town of Amherst encompasses the Village of Williamsville. The town is by the northern part of the county and borders a small section of the Erie Canal. The Town of Amherst is a Northeastern suburb of Buffalo, New York, approximately 65 miles from Rochester, NY and 90 miles to downtown Toronto, Ontario. Connected via major thruway to the Buffalo/Niagara International Airport (10 minutes).

Amherst is the fastest growing metropolitan area in Upstate New York, minutes from the City of Buffalo, 30 miles from one of the seven wonders of the world, Niagara Falls.
The town encompasses the five areas of Eggertsville, Snyder, Williamsville, Getzville and East Amherst. There is a wonderfully diverse culture and much upscale shopping, restaurants and entertainment. Tree-lined streets with neat, pretty homes prevail.
There are three school districts within the town, all highly rated. The huge, State University of New York at Buffalo and Damien College are located in the Town of Amherst and there are numerous other state and private 2 and 4 years colleges as well as technical training schools in the area.
Medical facilities are state of the art. Light and high tech industry abounds in the Industrial Parks. Voted in 1997 as one of the safest communities in the country, the Town of Amherst is a great place to live!
